The film is based on Pablo Vierci’s 2009 book, written with direct testimony from the survivors. It was Spain’s official entry for the Academy Awards (Best International Feature) and received two Oscar nominations—including for Best Makeup and Hairstyling (the prosthetics for the frostbitten survivors are terrifyingly realistic).
