The film revolves around the story of Lord Bernard de Clairvaux (played by Gerard Butler), a Templar Knight who returns from the Crusades and accuses a woman, Grand Inquisitor's (played by Jayne Heffner) niece, of witchcraft. The accused woman, named Alys (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal), is then put on trial. Lord Bernard de Clairvaux believes that Alys has made a pact with the devil and is responsible for the death of his wife.
