In D.H. Lawrence’s semi-autobiographical novel Sons and Lovers , the protagonist Paul Morel is paralyzed by his mother’s love. Mrs. Morel, disappointed in her marriage, pours her ambitions and emotional needs into her son. This "emotional incest" prevents Paul from forming healthy relationships with other women.
